Mattancherry Dutch Place was built by Portuguese and handed over to Cochin Raja in 1555 AD. Though built by the Portugese, it is popularly known as the 'Dutch Palace' as the Dutch renovated it during their short-lived region here. The center of the building has a Coronation Hall where Cochin Raja's investitures were held.
Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Rajas. Rooms adjacent display 17th century murals depicting scenes from the epic, the Ramayana. The palace is well known for its mural paintings, which are noted for their high level of excellence.
